We all love crossing over to Malaysia for weekend getaways. But what if you get into an accident. Do you know what to do to protect yourself in a foreign country?

  1. What to do before

Buy a car insurance that has extended coverage, which will protect you till West Malaysia. If you get a car loan, it is required by most financers to get an insurance protecting you against damages and injuries. If you frequently drive into Malaysia, it is advisable to get a comprehensive coverage.

Also have the emergency hotline number of your insurer saved to your phone. They can help you in providing reliable tow or repair services or to arrange for alternative transport back to Singapore.

And don’t let a random tow truck help you! It might be a scam and could possibly negate your insurance claim.

  1. STAY CALM!Japanese_car_accident_blur.jpgSource: Wikimedia
  1. Do the same things you would if you were in Singapore

For your claims to be successful make sure to get the other car’s plate number, and the driver’s identification and contact number. Also note the time and place of the accident and take photographs of the scene.

And remember to submit your claims with the relevant information within 24 hours of the accident.

Servicing your car can prevent breakdowns that could lead to such accidents. Let Carmen keep you safe! Carmen gives you information about your car’s vital performance stats and alerts you if there’s a problem, before something bad happens. More info at Carmen.sg

  1. Unsuccessful claims?

If you have tried everything and failed, approach General Insurance Association of Singapore (GIA) or its Malaysian counterpart, Persatuan Insuran Am Malaysia (PIAM) for assistance.

Always remember to drive safe and enjoy your time, carefree, in Malaysia!
